of DEREE
- Experienced
college instructors offer assistance to students in individual or small
group tutorials

DEREE Writing Center provides free study skills and exam-taking workshops
for students throughout the semester
Why visit the DEREE Writing Center?
At the DEREE Writing Center you will:

assistance with academic tasks related to reading, writing, or oral skills
in any course
- Benefit
from having others read and respond to your work
- Learn
to become critical thinkers and insightful readers
- Receive
training in study methods, exam preparation, and note-taking techniques
for lecture classes
- Obtain
assistance with graduate applications and personal statements
- Receive
help, support and encouragement
What will a tutor DO?
A
tutor will:
- Help you become a better writer and
communicator
- Encourage you, through discussion and
questions, to discover how to approach an assignment
- Focus on the aspect(s) of an assignment
that need(s) to be improved most
What will a tutor NOT do?
A
tutor will:
- NOT
write any parts of assignments. The writing belongs to you!
- NOT edit papers
- NOT
give grade estimates or evaluate work
- NOT
provide ready answers, but help you to find the answers yourself
How long does a tutorial last?
- Individual
student tutorials usually last around 30 minutes
- Group
tutorials for students may last 30 or 60 minutes, depending on the common
assignment to be discussed
How
many tutorials can you have?
- There
is no limit to the number of tutorials you can have. At the end of each
tutorial, further appointments can be scheduled
- Multiple
visits are recommended
How should you prepare for a tutorial?
- Before
you come, clarify with your instructor any questions you may have on the
assignment
- Bring
any guidelines and assignment sheets your instructor has given
- Bring
all the writing (prewriting, drafts, revisions) as well as all material
relevant to your project
- For
group tutorials with a common project, bring an extra copy of your work
for the tutor
