THE ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB

Our Mission

The Environmental Club´s mission is:

  • to promote awareness of environmental issues in the DEREE community
  • to encourage student participation in activities concerning pressing matters such as recycling, climate change, pollution, wise use of resources and the use of renewable energy sources
  • to help students appreciate the value of natural ecosystems
  • to support and further the development of establishing DEREE as a green campus.

 

Our activities

The goals of the club are achieved through a variety of activities:

  • Lectures by scientific experts and other distinguished speakers to inform students on environmental issues
  • Slide presentations on wildlife and natural ecosystems to encourage students to appreciate nature
  • Documentary screenings
  • Participation in exhibitions and in campaigns to raise environmental awareness, organized within the DEREE Community
  • Participation in College life and cooperation with other students, faculty and administration
  • Field trips to places of ecological interest 
  • Visits to research centers, exhibitions, museums
  • Presently, the environmental club works in close cooperation with the newly established Green Campus Committee, a committee that aims to promote environmental sustainability and stewardship at the American College of Greece. One of the two student representatives of this Committee is a member of the environmental club.

Recent Club Events and Activities

  • Environmental Club 2010-2011 Presentation
  • Participation in May Fest 2010 with a workshop on “Up-cycling”.
  • Organization of a campaign on Solid Waste Reduction and Recycling with preparation of pamphlets and preparation and conduction of a student survey. The campaign was organized within the framework of a Green Campus Committee project. The material prepared was posted on the “Know the Facts” board and distributed during “Wellness Experience 2010” and “May Fest 2010”.
  • Representation of the club in the Green Campus Committee that aims at promoting environmental sustainability at ACG (since fall 2009)
  • Proposal and initiation of recycling of plastic and other recyclable waste at the Deree College dining area, fall 2009.
  • “Home”: Screening of the magnificent documentary on planet Earth, October 2009
  • “Flow” (For Love of Water): Screening of the award-winning documentary on the World Water Crisis, May Fest 2009
  • Participation in Founders’ Day 2009” with screening of a video/documentary that the club prepared on the efforts of ACG to become an environmentally sustainable educational institution. Title of the video: “The American College of Greece: Green Steps”, April 2009
  • “The 11th Hour”: Screening of the famous documentary on climate change, December 2008
  • Tree Plantings a) on campus, organized by the club and b) at Kalivia, organized by SKAI, November 2008
  • Participation in “Wellness Experience 2009” with brochures, posters and screening of the documentary “Planet Earth”, April 2009
  • Proposals for a) re-establishing a Green Campus Committee and b) expanding the recycling program of Deree to include recycling of plastics, glass and metals and starting a recycling campaign, October 2008.
