Athletic Facilities

DEREE Gym
The gym is a multi-purpose facility that is the focal point of the DEREE athletic complex. The main level of the gym includes two cross-courts and one game court. The courts are used for volleyball, basketball and soccer. Cross-courts are used for team practices and intramurals while the game court is used for intercollegiate matches.

The lower level includes a spacious Fitness Center and two Dance / Aerobics studios. Also located on the lower level is the Fitness Office. The Office of Athletics is situated on the upper level of the gym, adjacent to the Sports Lounge.

Sports Lounge with Enhanced Game Area
The Sports Lounge and game area is open during regular gymnasium hours. A newly purchased pool table and hand soccer game compliment three ping pong tables, table games, and satellite television, making this the ideal area to lounge before, between and after classes.

Locker Rooms
There are two main locker rooms - one for men and one for women. Two faculty locker rooms are located next to the main locker rooms. Two team rooms are situated on the lower level. Students may use lockers on three conditions: they are using the gym, provide their own lock, and leave the locker empty and open after their workout.

Sauna
Available when the Fitness Center is open; patrons check out the key from and return to the Fitness Trainer after each use.

Helpful Hints for Sauna Use

  • Gain clearance from your doctor if you have any potential health issues including pregnancy.  Do not use the sauna if you have a fever.  Make sure all open wounds are properly covered.
  • Recommended temperature for the sauna is 80 degree centigrade with a maximum temperature of 100 degrees centigrade.
  • Leave the sauna if you become light headed, feel ill or strange, and report the situation to the lifeguard.
  • If laying down in the sauna; sit up and allow blood pressure to adjust before standing.
  • Maintain proper hydration while taking a sauna (approximately 8 ounces every fifteen minutes).
  • Shower before entering the sauna.
  • It is customary to sit on a towel or in a swim suit while in the sauna.
  • If you have been swimming prior to the sauna, rinse your suit before entering the sauna as other users may be sensitive to chlorine fumes.
  • Spend no more than 15 minutes per session with up to 3 sessions each sauna use.
  • It is refreshing to take a cold shower between sessions.
  • It is acceptable to add one dipper of water to the stones (heating elements) to gain a spike in temperature to start the sweating process.
  • Use caution when adding the water and do not have your hand directly over the stones; the steam could burn.
  • Eucalyptus Vapo can be used to give that distinct sauna aroma.  It should not be poured on to the stones.  Place about half an ounce in a full bucket of water and add one dipper to the stone.
  • Breathe slowly and cautiously after adding water to the stone to avoid burns to the respiratory tract.
  • Make sure the sauna is turned off, locked and key returned to the lifeguard after use.
