European Ombudsman Meets High School Principals at DEREE
European Ombudsman Nikiforos Diamandouros addressed a select group of secondary school principals and guidance counselors on November 29 as part of a series of events sponsored by the Office of Admissions of The American College of Greece.
The events, called Principals’ Dinners, are offered twice yearly at the DEREE Faculty Lounge as part of an effort to bring together on campus current newsmakers and secondary school administrators to address issues of common interest such as education in Greece and the European Union.
Professor Diamandouros’ lecture, “Meet the European Ombudsman”, included an explanation of the role and function of the ombudsman in Europe and specific examples of cases handled by Dr. Diamandouros as European and national ombudsman of Greece and concluded with questions from the audience.
The speaker was introduced by Dr. David G. Horner, president of The American College of Greece.
“Dr. Diamandouros explained how justice is more than just legality; it is ethical behavior,” one attendee commented after the event.
The evening concluded with an invitation by Dr. Diamandouros, who is emeritus professor of comparative politics at the University of Athens, to the educators in the audience to open the channels of communication with him on issues related to his role as ombudsman.
