Model United Nations Club

Model United Nations Club

Defining MUN

  • The MUN engages in authentic simulation of the United Nations system by giving participants the opportunity to learn about the UN decision making process, the skills of debate, compromise, conflict resolution, negotiation and multilateral diplomacy.
  • MUN team members have fun learning about the workings of world diplomacy through the lens of current events.
  • Participants research an assigned country, take on roles as diplomats of that specific country, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult and then develop solutions to world problems.
  • During a conference, participants must employ a variety of communication and critical thinking skills in order to represent the policies of their country.
  • MUN conferences give students the opportunity to role-play in the shoes of diplomats, represent real countries and press contemporary issues in a session of intergovernmental organization.
  • Students in particular majors may see greater application of their studies within the club’s focus and activities (i.e. History, Philosophy, Sociology, International Business and European Affairs)

Purpose
The purpose of the MUN Club is to encourage the development of skills useful throughout students’ lives, such as research, writing, public speaking, problem solving, consensus building, conflict resolution, compromise and cooperation. Also it is a way to extend students’ understanding of global issues while simultaneously promoting Deree College nationally and internationally in conferences throughout the academic community.

Significance
With over an estimated 400 Model U.N. conferences held annually worldwide on high school and undergraduate levels, the MUN Club benefits both the student community at the American College of Greece through the abilities and knowledge members acquire but also the College itself by representation at one of the most widespread academic activities that enjoys significant endorsement worldwide among academic communities.
