MS in Leadership

The MS in Leadership by the DEREE Graduate School is designed to educate and develop business leaders through a combination of solid theoretical knowledge, behavior modeling and hands-on experiential methods, equipping them with the competences and skills necessary for contemporary executives. The program aims to:

  • Provide current and aspiring leaders with the knowledge, skills and competencies that are critical for performing their leadership role effectively in today’s competitive and rapidly changing environment.
  • Develop current and aspiring leaders’ ethical sensitivity by increasing their awareness of ethical issues and moral principles.
  • Provide current and aspiring leaders with opportunities to critically reflect on their leadership competence and develop ‘real-life’ leadership competencies and skills.

The MS in Leadership starts in September and February each year and can be completed in 10 months on a full-time basis. Part-time study options are also available and are tailored to the individual needs of working students. The MS in Leadership Graduate Program Coordinator helps each student develop a schedule that best fits his/her needs. Classes typically meet between Monday-Thursday from 18:00-21:00.

Student Profile
The MS in Leadership is principally designed for two groups of participants:

  • Working professionals who want to enroll in a specialized graduate program in Leadership in order to enhance their effectiveness as leaders or team members inside their organizations.
  • Recent University graduates from any background who wish to develop leadership competences that will aid them in building and strengthening their careers.

Unique Features of the Program

Reflecting the latest developments in the Leadership field, the program incorporates topics and areas that are offered for the first time as part of a graduate degree in Greece, while maintaining the curriculum and educational standards of top American and European graduate programs. The philosophy of the MS in Leadership can be described as:

  • Experiential Program based on Learning by Doing: Focused not merely on providing theoretical knowledge, but on developing leadership competences. Based on behavioral modeling, experiential learning and learning adventures, which will enhance self-reliance, self-esteem and will develop real competences through “unique challenges”.
  • Utilizing the Whole Brain Technology™: Informed by a “Whole Brain Design”, which covers the four different thinking modes essential for profound learning:
    • Facts and Theory
    • Form and Practical Tools
    • Feelings, Teamwork and Learning-by-Doing
    • Futures, Systems View, Serious Play, and Imagination.
  • Learning Activities: To allow students to develop core competences and prepare for difficult and challenging real life situations the MS in Leadership offers additional unique features such as:
    • Simulations and Business Games
    • Invited speakers

    • Individual/Group action research projects
    • Personal Coaching and Mentoring, self awareness, personal re-engineering

Program Outcomes (Details)

Designed to provide a broad academic qualification and combining a theoretical framework with a practical orientation, the MS in Leadership provides students the opportunity to:

  • Master the essential concepts, tools and competencies required to perform their leadership role effectively
  • Lead people, teams and organizations through current and future challenges
  • Develop and formulate organizational strategic plans
  • Lead organizational change and apply tools and techniques to enhance the organization’s learning capability
  • Perform their leadership function as socially responsible, ethical members of organizations and the global community

Program Overview (Details)

To be awarded the MS in Leadership, students must complete 10 courses (30 credits), which include five core courses, four elective courses and the capstone course. The elective courses are drawn from two areas as specified in the diagram below:  Leadership electives, to equip participants with a number of more specific leadership and communication skills and general electives, to help participants develop a critical understanding of business functions that drive business leadership.

All classes are held weekday evenings from 18:00-21:00 to permit students to advance their education, while continuing to work.  Each course consists of 39 hours of instruction and assessment. Students can take up to 4 courses per semester, 2 courses in the Winter session and 1 course in each of the Summer and September sessions.

Admissions Criteria (Details)

The following are required of all Graduate School applicants:

  1. Completed application form (including essays on separate sheets)
  2. Passport size photograph
  3. Two recommendation letters (at least one from an academic source and one from an employer, the latter highly recommended for MBA candidates)
  4. Official college or university transcript of undergraduate degree studies from an accredited institution
  5. Official college or university transcript of graduate degree studies from an accredited institution (if applicable)
  6. Evidence of proficiency in English
  7. A certified copy of an identification card for Greek citizens or of a valid passport for non-Greeks

Candidates are also required to attend an interview with the respective Graduate Program Coordinator. The Graduate Program Coordinators will review an application upon submission of all required documentation to the Office of Admissions.

There is no application fee.

Transfer applicants should refer to the section entitled “Transfer Students”. Non-degree applicants should refer to the section entitled “Degree and Non-Degree Students”.

Evidence of Proficiency in English
All candidates must provide evidence of proficiency in the English language by submitting one of the following:

  1. TOEFL
  2. Cambridge, Michigan Proficiency Certificate or Michigan State University Certificate
  3. GCE
  4. International Baccalaureate Certificate or Diploma
  5. International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

Note: DEREE College graduates and graduates from other accredited English language institutions are not required to submit evidence of Proficiency in the English language.

Applicants presenting a TOEFL score should arrange to have the test results sent directly to the Office of Admissions by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The College’s Institution Code Number is 0925. TOEFL scores are valid for two years.

Letters of Recommendation
Each applicant for admission must submit two letters of recommendation. At least one of the references must be from an academic source. One letter from an employer is highly recommended for MBA candidates. A letter from a family member or a friend is not admissible.

Conditional Admission
Applicants who do not meet the minimum criteria may be admitted to the program on conditional status if the Graduate Program Coordinators perceives other strengths in their application (e.g., strong research or relevant work experience, or other outstanding achievements during the applicant’s undergraduate experience). In such cases, applicants will be expected to complete the requirements of the conditional admission within a specified period of time. Failure to complete these requirements will result in notification of dismissal by the Dean of the Graduate School. Students who have potential but lack the necessary prerequisites may be offered conditional admission and will be required to successfully complete preparatory courses, prior to being fully admitted.

Interview

Once a complete application package has been submitted, the Office of Admissions will contact the applicant to arrange an on-campus interview with the respective Graduate Program Coordinator.
