ELEFTHERIOS VENIZELOS CHAIR OF MODERN GREEK STUDIES CONFERENCE ON:
Colonizing the Greek Mind? The Reception of Western Psychotherapeutics in Greece
Tuesday, May 17, 2011, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. - John S. Bailey Library
This one-day conference will explore how psychotherapeutic practices of northern European or American origin entered Greek society. How did the Greek professional establishment receive psychotherapeutic ideas? Of special interest is the talking cure that these new psychotherapies introduced. How did Greek practitioners and patients negotiate the clinical encounter and how did they adjust to psychotherapeutic models of the person and the mind? Did successful application of the new psychotherapies require adopting a new sense of self and personality? A colonization of the Greek mind? Specialists in the fields of media studies, history, psychotherapeutics (from psychiatry to psychoanalysis), anthropology, and Orthodox Christianity will offer perspectives and respond to these questions.
