Designed to be user-friendly, important features of the examinations include the following:
• Recognition by ASEP
• Tests which use everyday language, that is, English as it is spoken and written around the world
• Structured speaking tests with descriptive, narrative and supported-opinion tasks
• Speaking and writing responses scored by at least two raters to ensure greater reliability
• A generous time limit of 35 minutes for the writing task
• Discrete testing of grammar, with the candidate’s performance being taken into
account in the computation of his or her overall writing ability
• Vocabulary which is tested within the context of the reading comprehension passages
and not discretely
• Reading comprehension passages featuring topics of general interest rather than being academically - weighted
• Previewing of questions during the listening comprehension portion of the exam with extra time provided for that purpose
• Longer listening passages which are played twice
• Reporting of scores for each section - Writing, Listening, Reading and Speaking - with
a maximum of 25 points awarded per section.
• Aggregate scoring being applied in determining success on the examinations, with
a total score of 60 and above considered a “Pass” provided a candidate receives
• 15 points or more on three or four sections and no fewer than 12 points on any of the sections
• The reporting of scores normally within 30 working days of completion of the examination
• The availability to the public of full-length practice test material and information on test preparation
