Lee Hitchen, an experienced higher education professional, has been appointed dean of students at DEREE - The American College of Greece. Hitchen brings more than a decade of experience in student affairs, athletics, enrollment management, and teaching to DEREE. Hitchen, a British citizen most recently working in the United States, will supervise a number of student life-related areas on both the Aghia Paraskevi and downtown campuses.
“We are delighted to have someone with Lee’s experiences and skills coming to The American College of Greece,” said John M. Baworowsky, vice president for enrollment and student services. “I am looking forward to Dean Hitchen building on DEREE’s long history of vibrant co-curricular opportunities.”
“I am incredibly excited to be joining the administration at ACG,” said Hitchen. “The position of dean of students will enable me to work with students on a daily basis and be an advocate for their needs. My wife and I are very much looking forward to immersing ourselves in Greek culture and taking every chance we get to explore the many wonderful sites and islands in this amazing climate.”
While working in the Office of Student Affairs at Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, West Virginia, Hitchen was involved with the planning and implementing of student activities and events. In addition to counseling the student government, he also played an active leadership role in the design and organization of orientation for domestic and international students. Later he worked in the admission office, guiding students and families through the university recruitment process. He worked predominantly with domestic students but also aided in the recruitment of international students along with assisting on immigration procedure. After regularly exceeding his recruitment goals and being trained in the Noel-Levitz enrollment management system, he accepted a position at the Illinois Institute of Technology as the head soccer coach, but then quickly assumed the responsibility of director of athletics at the university.
At the Illinois Institute of Technology, Hitchen resurrected both the men’s and women’s soccer teams, and oversaw the design and construction of a new natural grass floodlit facility that became known as one of the best natural grass soccer facilities in the Chicago area. During his tenure as director of athletics, Hitchen made significant changes and brought a great deal of success to the Illinois Tech athletic department. He responded to the student body’s needs with expanded hours of operation, new fitness classes, facility enhancements, an updated Web site, and department logo. Prior to his final year as head coach and athletic director, the men’s soccer team was crowned CCAC Conference champion and he was voted coach of the year by his peers.
Hitchen holds bachelor’s and Master of Business Administration degrees from Wheeling Jesuit University. He is a doctoral candidate at North Central University in Arizona.
